(I am aware that these were read out of order. I want to speak of two of the novels in particular CRUNCH and CLASH. Well, my daughter read them to me, but I was present and active in the storytelling. So much so, that for the kid’s birthday, we got her to complete series of Miller’s books.įull disclosure I am not a tween graphic novel aficionado, nor do I have a deep wealth of knowledge of this genre, as Kayla Miller’s books are the first tween graphic novels I have read. About two months ago, thanks in large part to our local library’s librarians (Support your local libraries, folks!) the kid found a series of tween graphic novels by the author Kayla Miller, that she has become a huge fan of. What I do is suggest we read together, or I take her to the library on rainy days, and I try to set the example of reading books around the home. I at least know enough not to force her to read, which would make it feel like a chore. Besides teaching her to love the Chicago Cubs, and to despise the Philadelphia Eagles, I also want to instill in her the love of books and reading. I’m trying to be a good parent to my daughter. (I will SPOIL these two books!!! You have been warned!!!)

He’s wounded, jaded, in possession of her letters… and ready to make good on every promise Maddie never expected to keep. The real Captain Logan MacKenzie arrives on her doorstep-handsome as anything, but not entirely honorable. Until years later, when this kilted Highland lover of her imaginings shows up in the flesh. Maddie poured her heart into writing the imaginary Captain MacKenzie letter after letter … and by pretending to be devastated when he was (not really) killed in battle, she managed to avoid the pressures of London society entirely. One who was handsome and honorable and devoted to her, but conveniently never around. So Maddie did what generations of shy, awkward young ladies have done: she invented a sweetheart. She was certain to be a dismal failure on the London marriage mart. On the cusp of her first London season, Miss Madeline Gracechurch was shyly pretty and talented with a drawing pencil, but hopelessly awkward with gentlemen. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Take your pick." If anything, we’ve become closer, our lives interwoven. It’s not that I think we’ve fallen out of love. I shouldn’t go around weighing every comment he makes-or noticing the ones he doesn’t make anymore. I guess he’s gotten less romantic the last few months. For the first year or so that we were together, he made a point of noticing details like that. It shouldn’t bug me that he didn’t mention anything about how I was wearing a similar red dress the night we met. He was momentarily complimentary about my hair and my slinky red cocktail dress before he went back to grousing about the wedding. It’ll probably wilt the second I get out of the car, but at least Jack got to appreciate it. It took me almost an hour and a half a can of Aussie Freeze Spray to get my straight, bra-clasp-length brown hair looking this supermodelish. E.D.'s pompous father directs a local production of The Sound of Music, while her mother breaks from her popular mysteries to write the Great American Novel her uncle carves a coffee table that her poet aunt defends to Jake, "Well, you couldn't put a cup of coffee on it, of course, but then who would want to? It's wonderfully soul-filling, don't you think?" Some of the plotting feels unfinished: E.D. Through Jake and E.D's alternating perspectives, Tolan ( The Face in the Mirror) introduces the outrageous titular clan. Twelve-year-old E.D., the only non-artistic (and organized) person in her family, feels like "the invisible Applewhite" and is wary of Jake. When Jake Semple is kicked out of yet another school, the Applewhites, an eccentric family of artists, offer to let him live with them and attend their unstructured Creative Academy. Soon she was an international star performing water ballets (and basically inventing synchronized swimming), at the New York Hippodrome with its huge glass tank, challenging swimsuit norms in her “one-piece suit” when women still wore bloomers and long-sleeve dresses, and appearing in films in the teens and twenties. She continued her competitive swimming and became famous for long-distance feats. She started performing “mermaid” acts swimming in tanks, and wowed crowds with high diving displays. She set records in the 100 yard and mile swims, and turned her talents to entertainment. By age fifteen, Annette was swimming competitively and giving diving exhibitions.Īt sixteen, Annette got serious. But swimming became more than just physical therapy. Her mom and dad made the fateful decision to enroll Annette in swimming classes to help strengthen her legs this exercise helped so much that her limbs were “normal” by age thirteen. Little Annette had a weakness in her legs which necessitated the use of metal braces. Annette Kellerman was born in 1886 to musician parents.
